HALL of BEER   -   YoungArchitectsCompetitions: Experiential Beer Garden

Surrounded by historical buildings and a beautiful park, the former aging cellar is an extraordinary place to host a special utilization. By opening the park facade, the hall starts to interact with its environment. The landscape gets connected with the architecture, while the architecture becomes part of the park. To encourage the former aging cellar and its shape, a new structure has been added.

The new extension building beside the former aging cellar is inspired by a well-known architectural theme, the bow. This motive can be found in the roof construction of the existing hall and offers a harmonic connection between old and new. Furthermore, the bow represents a hint to the building tradition of ancient aging cellars.

By entering the building via the new main entrance the visitors pass through the cellar-motive and enter a world of brewing, the HALL of BEER

The extension building offers three new levels and enough space for the new brewery with its four copper-kettles. On the ground floor the process of making beer can be experienced, while the museum, situated on a gallery on the second level, offers the possibility to get informed about the history of brewing. The former aging cellar is now used as a market hall where regional products are presented, tasted and bought. By using the house in house principle, the hall offers flexible spaces and can be arranged and changed into new structures. The beer lab is a separated area with a great view over the market hall and provides private spaces for cooking classes and tastings, so the beer way of live can be experienced.

Inspired by the tradition of enjoyment, a fundamental part of Italian culture, the Hall of Beer is designed to be an innovative marketplace for beer and regional products of Emilia Romagna.                                                                     (7vD - JANUARY 2017)
